Freedom From Addiction respects and welcomes people from all walks of life seeking change in their lives. If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, we celebrate your individuality and applaud your boldness in taking the initiative towards healing. We genuinely understand the struggles you had to endure that potentially led you to addiction. We are here to support you every step of the way with our LGBTQ addiction recovery program.

What is Addiction Treatment & Recovery for the LGBTQ+ Community?

Members of the LGBTQ+ population are saddled with systemic and structural challenges in our flawed society that increases their vulnerability to substance abuse and mental health issues. Unfortunately, not everyone is accepting of LGBTQ+ folks. Non-conformity to “normative gender standards” makes them targets for stigma and discrimination, from family, friends, and colleagues.

As a result, studies show that LGBTQ+ folks face higher incidence rates of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and phobic disorders, suicidality, self-harm, and substance use. They are also 2 to 4 times more likely to abuse tobacco, alcohol, and other addictive substances (marijuana, amphetamines, and heroin) than their heterosexual counterparts.

Their struggle with addiction is deeply rooted in these environmental factors. Hence, they must receive an LGBTQ addiction treatment with a broader understanding of their social, legal, and health implications. LGBTQ addiction recovery programs should be composed of integrative therapies tailored to you or your loved one's specific clinical and lifestyle requirements.

How LGBTQ Addiction Treatment Programs Work

Freedom From Addiction does not have a specific LGBTQ addiction recovery program. However, we provide a safe, sensitive, and sober space and offer different types of LGBTQ-friendly addiction treatment programs. These include:

Residential Treatment

A full-service, live-in treatment program for 30 to 90 days in our serene recovery facility assisted by our well-trained healthcare professionals.

We have a highly competitive and compassionate medical team composed of doctors and nurses who monitor clients' overall health and withdrawal symptoms. At the same time, you can enjoy the tranquillity of our addiction treatment facility. Depending on their particular treatment needs, they go through various tailored programs that improve their fitness, nutrition, and emotional health.

Outpatient Program

The client is not required to live within the facility but is requested to spend a significant amount of time at our rehabilitation centre for alcohol or addiction therapy. Our outpatient program is ideal for preventing potential relapse.

Behavioural Counselling

This is an essential part of LGBTQ addiction recovery. Behavioural counselling aims to discover the probable root causes of addiction to formulate a genuinely effective treatment solution for the individual. It can also be used to identify and destroy usual thought patterns that lead to self-abusive thoughts and destructive behaviour.

We also implement research-based LGBT-friendly approaches like cognitive behavioural therapy, multidimensional therapy, anger management, and motivational interviews to encourage clients to walk away from substance use or alcohol after methadone detox

Continuing Care

To reinforce healing and recovery, we also provide continuing care programs as follow up measures for our LGBTQ addiction treatment program. Its purpose is to empower clients by offering ongoing emotional and social support as they gradually transition back into the outside world. These include family counselling, group counselling, individual counselling, life skills training, and relapse prevention.

Our comprehensive LGBTQ addiction treatment approaches cover alcoholism and drug addiction from cocaine, heroin, ecstasy (MDMA), opiates, marijuana, LSD, methamphetamine, DMT, GHB, and prescription drugs.

The Importance of Addiction Treatment Programs for the LGBTQ Community

We need LGBTQ-centered addiction treatment programs more than ever because there is no denying the pervasiveness of substance use in the LGBTQ+ population. The 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) revealed a significantly higher incidence rate of substance abuse among sexual minority groups than the majority.

Early intervention and implementation of LGBTQ addiction recovery programs can help save countless lives, especially for LGBTQ youth who are 14 times higher risk of suffering from substance abuse or attempting suicide.

The success of LGBTQ addiction treatment lies in recognizing the unique aspects of these extraordinary clients' lives, which can include homophobia, issues with family relationships, violence, and instances of discrimination. It can play a pivotal role in teaching them how to cope emotionally without harming themselves or resorting to using addictive substances like alcohol and illicit drugs.

LGBTQ addiction treatment programs should also consider dual diagnosis or the existence of other co-occurring disorders, such as serious mental health issues, as a comorbid condition. Both chronic disorders should be given equal priority when it comes to treatment because taking one for granted could spell relapse for the client.
